    PRINCIPLE

LDL and VLDL (low and very low density lipoproteins) are precipitated from serum by the action of a sulfated polysaccharide, in the presence of divalent cations. Then, the cholesterol bound to high density lipoproteins (HDL- cholesterol) present in the supernatant, is determined.

    DIAGNOSTIC USE

The fraction of the cholesterol bound to high density lipoprotein is an indicator of the risk of coronary heart disease. High levels of HDL-cholesterol appear to act as a protective factor, while low values are one of the major risk factors. Determination of HDL- cholesterol, along with comprehensive study of the lipid profile of the patient, allows assessing the risk of coronary heart disease. Low levels of HDL- cholesterol are found in cases of unbalanced diet, sedentary lifestyle, alcoholism or smoking.

A single test result could not be used to make a clinical diagnosis. It should integrate clinical and laboratory data.
